This speach was given in 1964 in support of Barry Goldwater's bid for the presidency against Lyndon Johnson. This was just after Reagan switched from a democrat to a republican. Johnson won his first elected term by a landslide. Your grandmother was a Goldwater supporter but Goldwater was considered too conservative and a reactionary. Thereafter Reagan took the conservative mantra. Reagan won the California governorship in 1970 and he lost his bid for the republican presidential nomination in both 1968 and 1976. He won the nomination and the office in 1980. Reagan was never a libertarian.
